4 steps to creating a reachable goal
The first step in achieving your desires is getting crystal clear about what it is that you really want. And I mean really want – not what you "think" you should do or what other people want you to do – but what are your deepest, truest desires? Anything goes so don’t judge yourself.
Creating a compelling reason why will be your North Star, your guiding light to bring you back when you've veered off course (which will happen). Below I've laid out the essential questions you need to answer to begin to make your map to your dreams. Carve out a few minutes to journal the following questions.
1. Find out your WHY.
What do you want? Do you want better sleep? More energy? To reach your optimal weight? Find better balance in your life?
Why do you want this? Do you want more energy for the important things in life like being more present with your kids and/or your partner? Why is this goal important to you?
What is NOT having this costing you? What are you missing out on by NOT having this? Are stuck in a cycle of unhealthy cravings and addictions? Do you feel like a slave to your unhealthy habits? Do you feel out of control of your time? Do you feel like you're not in charge of your life?
What's the possibility if you achieve this desire? How would your life be different? What could you do that you can’t do now? What have you been putting off that you could go after if you had the energy/confidence/vibrant health? What benefits are there to achieving your goal (for you, for others)?
What specific action do you need to take to get there? (there might be more than one, pick just one to start)
2. Measure your progress.
How will you know if you're moving in the direction of your goals? If your goal is to lose weight, your scale is an unbiased way of knowing if you're making headway. You need a way to rate or score yourself to see if you're gaining ground. What is the marker you will use to know you've achieved your goal? If your goal is vibrant health, one of the best measuring sticks is how you feel when you wake up in the morning. If you feel excited, optimistic, energized, clear and motivated – you know you're doing something right.
3. How will you get there?
To know if your goal is achievable you need to know:
What obstacles might arise on the path to getting there? Is your goal doable at this time in your life? Do you have what it takes to make the necessary steps for you to succeed?
4. By when?
Without a sense of urgency, chances are you'll be making the same goal next year (and the next and the next). The average person makes the same resolution 10 years in a row!!! So the question is – if not now...when?? Life is short and time is limited. Don’t waste another moment of your precious life.
