5 reasons why you're procrastinating on healthy habits

If your health a priority?

Is it really?

Then why aren't you doing what you know you should to improve your health?

If we know making a certain change - be it eating a healthier diet, getting more sleep, or exercising regularly would improve our lives - why don't we do it?

Why do we keep procrastinating on creating healthy habits that will allow us to live healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives?

It seems kind of asinine doesn't it?

Well, there's a reason for it. 5 actually. Here they are:

  1. You don't have a clear goal. "Eating a healthier diet" is not a clear goal. It's a vague wishy-washy goal. Eating greens at every meal and cutting out processed foods (anything from a box, package or can) is a clear goal. Clear goals give us direction. Without direction we get easily distracted - which leads to #2
  2. You're too distracted. We are surrounded by bright, shiny objects and constant stimulation. As a result our attention span is shrinking and inhibits our ability to focus on one thing at a time. Our busy lives have encouraged multi-tasking in an attempt to get everything done and as a result we're spinning our wheels getting nowhere.
  3. You haven't identified your why. Without a strong why there is no way. Our why is the fuel behind our motivation. It helps us prevail over resistance and brings us back on track when we veer off course. If we're not emotionally connected to why we want something, the pull of our old ways will be too strong to overcome.
  4. It seems too hard. We often can think of a laundry list of things we should do to improve our health - and if you're into health and wellness there are more and more "recommendations" to follow every day. Where to start? It can feel like too much and too overwhelming so we end up paralyzed and frozen in inaction. And this becomes self-perpetuating: the more we procrastinate, the bigger deal it seems. Often when we just take the first step it's never as hard as we've made it out to be. The key is breaking your goals down into bite size chunks and then baby stepping our way forward towards them.
  5. You don't have accountability. I've said it before and I'll say it again - you're 70% more likely to make changes when you have peer support and accountability than if you try to do it alone. Our habits are contagious. We will default to the behaviors of the people around us (unless we have a clear goal and a strong why that's connected to our values). When you're tapped into a community of like-minded peeps who have similar health goals and are striving towards better habits, or even if you have an accountability partner to keep you on track, you'll be so much more successful.

We all want to feel like we're making progress and not regressing. We have a human need for growth and when we feel stagnant or stuck it can weigh heavily on us.

When we do what we know we should, we feel better about ourselves. We build up our confidence and self-trust by honoring what we know, and then happiness and well being follows.

Getting out of the cycle of self-sabotaging behaviors can be as easy as taking one step in the right direction and making the decision to change.
