Episode 102: Understanding and Reducing Anxiety

Anxiety is an inevitable part of being human.

As humans, we’re wired to look for threats. Anxiety serves to prepare us for possible danger. It’s a built-in survival mechanism meant to keep us safe. Thank you, brain.

Also, the nature of reality is that we can’t predict the future and we can’t control the world. This fact contributes to all the anxiety-related emotions of fear, worry, nervousness and unease. Since it’s impossible to be completely free of anxiety, we might as well get better at dealing with it.

Anxiety, like any other difficult emotion, feels more overwhelming the more we resist it. The more we attempt to construct our lives around avoiding these unpleasant feelings, the more powerless we feel over them.

These intense emotions end up running our lives, leading to procrastination, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and disconnection from ourselves and others.

In this episode, I explain what anxiety is, how you can change your relationships with it and ultimately, how to reduce it.
